What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we will be starting a reader's theater.  A readers theater is a script the class will read through to practice using expression and fluency.  It is like a mini play without the acting part.  We will practice the reader's theater this week and perform it next week Tuesday, May 15th at 2:20.  Please practice your child's part with him/her.  It does not need to be memorized, they will have the script with them the whole time.  We will also be meeting with guided reading groups this week so they will have that homework as well.  Reminder that book reports are due tomorrow! I am so excited to see their projects.  We also have the reading MAPS test this week Tuesday so I will probably not have time to meet with reading groups this day.

Fundations:  We will continue with unit 13 which focuses on the adding suffix -s, -es, and -ing to multi syllable words.  We will continue to learn spelling patterns for adding -es to make words plural.

Spelling:  There will be spelling words this week.  We will take the pre-test on Monday and the final test on Friday.

Writing: This week we will continue with our nonfiction unit.  We will finish up our research on an animal in pairs.  Then we will begin to write sentences using the facts that were found.  They will do this part individually.

Math:   We will finish up with unit 8 which focuses on 2-digit addition.  We will review on Monday and take the unit 8 test on Tuesday.  We will then take a end of the year test, this will not be a graded test but it will help me to see what they learned this year and what I may need to go over again.  We will then begin a short money unit where we will learn the coin names and amounts they are worth.  We will also practice counting money.  We will take the math MAPS test on Monday morning.  This is done on the computer using headphones.  I reminded all the students that they need WORKING headphones so please check with them that their headphones work.  Some students have been having problems with their headphones and I think it is because they are not always putting them away correctly.  I have 1 extra pair of headphones that I have already lent out to a student so I don't have any extras.

Religion: We will then finish up with chapter 11 called "The Holy Spirit Helps the Church Grow".  We will talk about how the Holy Spirit helps the Church today.  We will review everything from chapter 11 on Tuesday and take the chapter 11 test on Wednesday.  We will then begin chapter 16 called "We Celebrate the Sacraments".  We will begin by talking about how Jesus celebrated God's love with sacraments.

Science: We will continue with our "Solids and Liquids Unit". We will use everything we learned about solids to experiment with two new solids.  We will then begin the liquids part of the unit.  This part is always more fun for the students.  We will begin looking at 3 liquids and discussing their color, opacity, and feel.

What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we will read "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel"  We learn about pronouns this week.  We will find them in books and write sentences using pronouns. Reminder that the book report is due next week Monday, May 7th.  Let me know if you have any questions about it.

Fundations:  We will begin unit 13 which focuses on the adding suffix -s, -es, and -ing to multi syllable words.  We will learn spelling patterns for adding -es to make words plural.

Spelling:  There will be spelling words this week.  We will take the pre-test on Monday and the final test on Friday.  These words will have the -es suffix.

Writing:  Due to a busy last week, we focused just on sentence fixers.  This week we will finally begin our nonfiction unit.  We will research an animal and then write about this animal.  We will research in pairs.

Math:   We will continue unit 8 which focuses on 2-digit addition.  The students are doing well with learning the new group above method.  The biggest mistakes I have noticed so far is carrying the one over but not adding it and also carrying a 1 over when it isn't needed.  We will continue to practice this method.  I will also teach them another method to add.  The students will learn 3 methods to add 2-digit numbers and I let them chose the method that words best for them.  I encourage the new group above method because this will be the easiest going forward as they get into second grade and harder math problems.

Religion: We will then begin chapter 11 called "The Holy Spirit Helps the Church Grow".  We will begin by talking about how the Church began on Pentecost.  We will also talk about the first members of the Church and how the Holy Spirit helped the Church to grow.

Science: We will continue with our "Solids and Liquids Unit". We will continue by talking about the characteristics of solids.  We will build ramps to observe which items roll, how far they roll, whether they roll straight, etc.  We will also look at the hardness of solids and whether they float or sink in water.

What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we will read "How I Became a Pirate"  We will retell the story, review setting, and the character traits using this book.  We will also finish our mystery bag activity on Monday, please remind your kids to bring their mystery bags back to school if they haven't already.  I will also assign a book report project on Thursday.  This project will be due Monday, May 7th.  Look for more information to come home on Thursday.

Fundations:  We will finish up with unit 12 which focuses on syllable division and compound words.  We will review what a compound word is and continue to work on syllable division.  We will also learn the spelling pattern of "ic".

Spelling:  There will be spelling words this week.  We will take the pre-test on Monday and the final test on Friday.  Some words will be repeated from a previous list.  We need more practice with some of these words.

Writing:  We are going to start practicing with sentence fixers (looking for errors in sentences and fixing them).  This will help us to realize mistakes we are making in our sentences (capital letters, punctuation, subject-verb agreement, etc.).  We will also begin our nonfiction unit.  We will research an animal and then write about this animal.  We will research in pairs.

Math:  We will finish up unit 7 which focuses on time, geometry, and measurement.  We will take the unit 7 test on Monday (we will review a bit before taking the test).  We will then begin unit 8 which focuses on 2-digit addition.  We begin by reviewing ten sticks and ones.  We first learn to add 2-digit numbers by breaking the number into tens and ones.  We will then learn the "new group above method" (which is the typical add the ones, carry over, and then add the tens).  I teach them multiple methods to add 2-digit numbers and let them choose which method makes the most sense to them.  As we learn each method, I encourage them to practice every method until they choose one they like the best.

Religion: We will finish up with chapter 10 called "Jesus Sends the Holy Spirit". We will talk about the Holy Spirit being the third person of the Blessed Trinity.  We will also review the Glory Be prayer at this time.  This seems to be the prayer that most of the students are struggling to learn.  We will review for the chapter 10 test on Tuesday and take the final test on Wednesday.  We will then begin chapter 11 called "The Holy Spirit Helps the Church Grow".  We will begin by talking about how the Church began on Pentecost.

Science: We were finally able to plant our bean seed.  The students are very excited to watch them grow.  We are also experimenting with 2 seeds.  We have one seed in the closet so it doesn't get any sun and another seed on the windowsill but we won't water it.  It's interesting to see what they think will happen to these two seeds.  We will begin our "Solids and Liquids Unit".  We will be using an Einstein kit for this.  These kits provide us with all the materials we need to learn about solids and liquids using a very hands on experience.  This is always a favorite for the students.  We will begin by talking about the characteristics of solids.  We will compare items by color, shape, and whether they roll or stack.

**We will continue practicing for the spring program this week.  We will practice everyday this week. This will rearrange our schedule just a bit but I will still try to get as much in as possible.  I will still cover math, reading, and religion each day.  Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

**The ABC countdown will begin on Thursday.  This is a school wide countdown to the end of the year.  Each day is a letter and has something fun about it.  Some days will be dress up days, some will require students to bring something in, and others have fun activities planned by the teachers.  Look for the full countdown to come home this week. See below for the first few days.

Upcoming Events:
*Thursday, April 26th: A - "And I Speak for the Trees!!" The Lorax will be presented at 9:30am and 6:00pm

Reading: This week we will read "Dooby, Dooby, Moo."  We will learn about inferencing.  We will complete a few activities on how to make an inference.  I will be sending home an activity on Thursday, that will be due on Monday (the 23rd).  This activity will ask students to put something inside a paper bag and then write 4 clues for us to guess what is inside the bag.  This will help us to work on our inference skills.

Fundations:  We will continue with unit 12 which focuses on syllable division and compound words.  We will review what a compound word is and continue to work on syllable division.

Spelling:  There WILL be spelling words this week.  We will take the pre-test on TUESDAY and the final test on Friday.

Math:  We will continue with unit 7 which focuses on time, geometry, and measurement.  We will begin to measure items.  In first grade, we only measure using objects, not using a ruler.  We will measure items to help us understand the concept of measurement.  They will learn to use a ruler in second grade.  If I have extra time at the end of the year, I like to add some ruler practice.  We will review for the unit 7 test on Thursday and Friday.  We will take the unit 7 test on Monday.  I will review anything needed Monday morning before taking the test.

Religion: We will continue with chapter 10 called "Jesus Sends the Holy Spirit".  We will talk about how the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost and discuss what Pentecost is.  We will also talk about the Holy Spirit being the third person of the Blessed Trinity.  We will also review the Glory Be prayer at this time.  This seems to be the prayer that most of the students are struggling to learn.  We will review for the chapter 10 test on Thursday and take the final test on Monday.

Science: We will continue with our Life Science Unit.  We will continue with chapter 1 which focuses on plants.  We will continue to talk about the roots of plants and how water moves through a plant.  We will talk about what parts of plants we can eat.  We will discuss the life cycle of a plant.  I am going to push back the planting of a seed until next week, hopefully it'll warm up a bit.  It will still be too cold on the windowsills for these plants to grow.

**We will continue practicing for the spring program this week.  We will practice on Monday and Fridays every week.  We may practice Tuesday mornings if needed.  This will rearrange our schedule just a bit but I will still try to get as much in as possible.  I will still cover math, reading, and religion each day.  Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
