What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we read "Turk and Runt". We will review what a noun, verb, and adjective is.  We will also work on responding to questions about a book through writing.  There will be new guided reading books this week, but I will only meet with each group one time this week.  

Fundations:  We will not be starting a new unit.  We are going to work on our sight words this week.

Spelling:  No spelling test this week!

Writing:  We are going to finish our how-to stories.  We are also going to work on a thankful writing project, describing what we are thankful for this Thanksgiving.

Math: We will continue with Unit 3 which focuses on story problem strategies.  We are going to continue to practice with subtraction story problems.  We will then work with a mix of addition and subtraction story problems.

Religion: We will finish up chapter 12 which is called "The Church Serves".  We will review in class on Monday and take the chapter 12 test on Tuesday.

Social Studies: We will continue with our Geography Unit.  We are going to take a closer look at our country, state, and town.  We will also discuss the First Thanksgiving.

What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we read "Curious George". We will review what an adjective is and practice writing with adjectives.  We will also learn what a main character is and work on character traits for the main character.  

Fundations:  This week we will begin unit 5 which focuses on the glued sounds an and am.  We will learn the an and am sound and practice writing and reading words that have these glued sounds.

Spelling:  There will be a spelling test this week.  This weeks words will focus on the glued sounds an and am.

Writing:  We are going to continue working on our how-to stories.  We are going to continue to write our first drafts and work on editing our how-to stories.

Math: We will continue with Unit 3 which focuses on story problem strategies.  We will review how to count on to find the unknown partner.  We will also learn subtraction strategies to find the unknown partner of a story problem.

Religion: We will begin with chapter 12 which is called "The Church Serves".  We will learn more about the Apostles and how they led and cared for the Church.  We will learn the Bishops and Pope Francis' jobs within the Church.

Social Studies: We will continue with our Geography Unit.  We will discuss our country and how Alaska and Hawaii are part of the U.S. but are further away from the other states.  We will also discuss the North America continent and take a brief look at Canada and Mexico.

What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we read "The Important Book".  The last animal we need to discuss is the "Tryin' Lion" which reminds us to reread the sentence and try to guess the word that makes the most sense.  We will also learn what an adjective is and find some in our books.  We will also learn how to compare and contrast two topics.  We will pick up guided reading books again.  I will meet with each group at least 2 times this week.  Look for new books to come home either Monday or Tuesday.

Fundations:  This week we will continue with unit 4 which focuses on bonus letters and the glued sound "all".  We will review and work with the "all" sound and bonus letter rules.

Spelling:  There will be no spelling words this week!

Writing:  We are going to continue working on our how-to stories.  We are going to start by choosing a topic and listing all the materials needed for this topic.  We will then write our first draft of our how-to stories.

Math: We will begin Unit 3 which focuses on story problem strategies.  We will begin by learning how to find the unknown partners using math mountains and story problems.

Religion: We will continue with chapter 8 called "Jesus had Many Followers".  We will continue to learn that Jesus showed us how to pray by teaching us the Our Father prayer.  We will review chapter 8 on Wednesday and take the chapter 8 test on Thursday.

Social Studies: We will continue with our Geography Unit.  We will discuss landmarks (lake, forest, river, ocean,etc).  We will also talk about what the Earth looks like and what a globe is.

What's coming up this week

Reading: This week we read "Don't Let the Pigeon Stay up Late".  We will learn and discuss the character traits of the pigeon as well as sequencing events from the book.  There will not be new guided reading books this week.  I am going to test the students at new guided reading levels before the end of the quarter.

Fundations:  This week we will begin unit 4 which focuses on bonus letters and the glued sound "all".

Spelling:  There will be a spelling test this week.  The words will have the "all" sound.

Writing:  We are going to work on a red ribbon week writing book.  We will discuss healthy and unhealthy choices.  If we finish this early then we will go back to writing our how to stories.

Math: We will finish up unit 2 which focuses on addition and subtraction strategies. We will review in class on Tuesday and take the test Thursday due to mass being Wednesday morning.

Religion: We will begin chapter 8 called "Jesus had Many Followers".  We will learn about the story of Peter and Andrew and how they followed Jesus.  We will also learn that Jesus showed us how to pray by teaching us the Our Father prayer.

Social Studies: We will continue with our Geography Unit.  We will discuss following direction using the directional words north, south, east, and west.

Halloween Party: The students are allowed to dress up in their costumes all day!  We will have our Halloween party in the afternoon.  We will have juice, snacks, make slime (SHHH...Keep this a secret!!), and play games.

Parent/Teacher Conferences: Please sign up if you haven't done so already.  You will be receiving your child's report card at this conference.  Let me know if none of the times available work for you, and we can schedule a different time.

What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we read "There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat".  We will review verbs, nouns, and plural nouns.  There will not be new guided reading books this week.  I am going to test the students at new guided reading levels before the end of the quarter.

Fundations:  This week we review reading and writing with digraphs.

Spelling:  There will be no spelling test this week.

Writing:  We are going to start our how-to writing unit.  The students will pick a topic that they are really good at and write a how-to story explaining the steps.

Math: We will continue with unit 2 which focuses on addition and subtraction strategies. We will review addition and subtraction stategies.

Religion: We will finish up chapter 5 by reviewing for the test on Monday and taking the test Wednesday.

Social Studies: We will continue with our Geography Unit.  We will discuss symbols on a map and using the key to help us follow routes.

What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we will not read a new book or learn a new animal.  We are going to continue to work with skippy frog and the book "The Relatives Came".  We will also review what a plural noun is and how to make a noun plural.  We will also continue to work with the setting of books.  Guided reading should go back to "normal", just missing Thursday due to the field trip.  Your child should get a new book on either Monday or Tuesday, depending on when I meet with his/her group.

Fundations:  This week we will finish up unit 3 which teaches the digraphs (wh, ch, sh, th, and ck).  We will also review letter sounds and work on tapping out 3 letter words.  We will review how to read, spell, and mark up digraphs.

Spelling:  We will have spelling words this week.  We will take a pretest on Monday and the final test on Friday.  If your child gets 100% on the pretest, they do not have to take the final test on Friday.  Please practice the words every night with your child.  This week's words are words with digraphs in them.

Writing:  We are going to finish up writing a personal narrative stories.  Most students have finished writing their personal narratives and are working on their illustrations.  We will then begin our how to writing unit.

Math: We will continue with unit 2 which focuses on addition and subtraction strategies. We will learn subtraction using equations and circle drawings.  

Religion: We will begin chapter 5 called "Jesus Teaches us about Love".  We will talk about how people wanted to follow Jesus and how Jesus taught us the Great Commandment.  We will also talk about how Jesus taught us to love God, ourselves, and others.

Social Studies: We will begin our first social studies unit of the year.  I like to teach a full unit of science and then a full unit of social studies.  We will begin with our Geography Unit.  We will learn about map skills first.  We will discuss what a map is and how to use it to find a specific place.  We will also learn about symbols on a map.

Field Trip: We are going to be gone almost all day on Thursday.  Please dress your child for the weather!  We will be doing lots of walking around and the fields might be muddy when we pick pumpkins.  Please send your child to school with a completely disposable lunch (NO SODA).  Also your child needs to bring an old pillowcase to carry his/her pumpkin in.

What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we will learn "Skippy Frog" which teaches us to skip the unknown word, finish the sentence, and hop back to the unknown word and see if you can read it now.  We will read "The Relatives Came" this week and discuss how to use skippy frog to help us read.  We will also learn what a plural noun is and find them in our books.  We will be taking our MAPS reading and math tests this week, both are scheduled during our reading block.  Due to this guided reading will be a bit mixed up this week.  I will for sure meet with every group once this week and try to meet with them twice.  Please be patient this week when it comes to getting new books and reading homework.  Next week we will get back into meeting three times a week for guided reading.

Fundations:  This week we will begin unit 3 which teaches the digraphs (wh, ch, sh, th, and ck).  We will also review letter sounds and work on tapping out 3 letter words.  We will learn how to read, spell, and mark up digraphs.

Math: We will continue with unit 2 which focuses on addition and subtraction strategies.  We will learn how to count on from the greater number to get the total,.  We will also begin to work with subtraction using pictures to help us subtract.

Religion: We are going to finish up chapter 4 called "Jesus Works Among the People".  We will review in class on Monday and take the chapter 4 test on Tuesday.  We will then begin chapter 5 called "Jesus Teaches us about Love".  We will talk about how people wanted to follow Jesus and how Jesus taught us the Great Commandment.

Science: We will finish up our Earth science unit. We will talk about the sun, moon, and stars.  We will discuss why we need the sun, what the moon is like, and what the stars are like.
