What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we will learn "Stretchy Snake" which reminds us to sound out each sound and then put them all together to determine an unknown word.  We will read "If you Take a Mouse to School" this week and discuss how to use stretchy snake to help us read.  We will also review what a noun is after we read the story.  This week I will continue to test students at their guided reading levels and sight word level.  I was hoping to finish this already, but need a little more time.  I will be starting to send sight words this week, these should go home and come back to school everyday.  Please help your child keep these sight words in their folders or backpacks.

Fundations:  This week we will finish up with unit 1.  Unit 1 is a review of all the letter sounds that was learned in Kindergarten.  We will review the letters l, h, k, v, w, y, x, z, and qu.  We will review that q is always followed by the letter u.  We will review what alphabetical order is.  We will take the unit 1 test on Friday.

Spelling:  We will not start spelling this week.  Spelling will start when we begin unit 2 of fundations.  Our spelling units will then correspond with what we are learning in fundations. Spelling tests and work will begin next week.

Writing:  We are going to continue to write in our writing journals.  We are also going to begin writing a personal narrative which is a story about something that has happened in their life.  We will focus on a special vacation, trip, and/or event.

Math: We will finish up with unit 1 which focuses on early number activities. We will discuss partners of 10 this week.  Partners of a number are two numbers that when added together they make the total.  We will take our unit 1 test on Friday.  We will review in class on Thursday.

**We will continue to have a math homework sheet each day.  I ask all students to write in their planners before I give them their homework.  I ask them to cross it out if they finish it in class.  I am trying to get them into the habit of writing in their planner each day and crossing out their work as they go.  This will especially help for when they get older and have more homework.  Please remind your student to only cross out their work it is done.  Also please be sure that they are not leaving their homework at home, I had a lot of students tell me they don't know what happened to their homework this week.

Religion: We are going to begin chapter 2 called "We Believe in the Blessed Trinity".  We will learn what the Blessed Trinity is and how it is three persons in one God.  We will also discuss how God sent his son to us and that Jesus is our greatest gift.

Science: We will continue with our Earth science unit.  We will learn about the different layers of Earth.  We will talk about how we use air, land, and water everyday.  We will discuss what it means to recycle.

Mondays Field Trip: Please dress appropriately for the weather.  We will be outside for most of the activities.  We will be eating lunch at 1000 Island's.   Please send your child with a completely disposable lunch on Monday, including a drink (NO SODA!!).

We will discuss partners of 6, 7, 8, and 9 this week.  Partners of a number are two numbers that when added together they make the total.  For example a partner of 6 would be 3 and 3.  We will continue to have a math homework sheet each day.  I ask all students to write in their planners before I give them their homework.  I ask them to cross it out if they finish it in class.  I am trying to get them into the habit of writing in their planner each day and crossing out their work as they go.  This will especially help for when they get older and have more homework.

Religion: We are going to finish up chapter 1 called "God is Our Father".  We will discuss how God gives us special gifts through the creation.  We will also talk about how we need to be thankful for these gifts and to treat his Earth with respect.  We will review for the chapter 1 test Tuesday and Wednesday.  We will take the chapter 1 test on Thursday.  We take the test together, so I can read the questions and explain the questions in their terms.

Science: We will continue with our Earth science unit.  We will discuss and observe different types of rocks.  We will also discuss how weather can have an impact on rocks.  We will then discuss Hurricane Irma and the wild fires out west.  We will briefly talk about how Earth is impacted by these.  We will also discuss how we need to take care of God's Earth to slow down these weathering processes.

What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we will learn about the different centers that make up our guided reading.  We will learn the writing center, word work center, listening center, read to self center, and teacher table.  We will also learn about the "Osmo" which is a tool to help us with our letter sounds and building words.  The class will be using an app called "Teach your Monster to Read".  There will be a letter coming home on Thursday after I show the class this app.  The letter will help you set up this app at home if you desire. This app is a fun and unique way to learn letter sounds, blending words, and reading.  As we learn about each center and I feel comfortable that everyone knows what they are to do at each center, I will begin guided reading testing and sight word testing.

Fundations:  This week we begin unit 1.  Unit 1 is a review of all the letter sounds that was learned in Kindergarten.  We will begin with the letters t, b, f, n, m, i, u, c, and o.  We will also review what alphabetical order is.

We will begin by discussing numbers 1-10 and seeing numbers as having a 5 group.  We will use 5 groups and extra ones to count and find partners of numbers 1-10.  We will also start our math facts test, every student will have their own goal to reach.  I determine the goal based off of the number of numbers they can write in 1 minute.  We will also be starting a math facts game called "XtraMath" which will help students practice their math facts.  I will be sending home math fact flashcards home to practice with.  They will get more flashcards as they pass each level.

Religion: We are going to begin chapter 1 called "God is Our Father".  We will discuss how God is our Father and how God created the world.  We will review the creation story that they learned last year.

Science: I teach a full unit of science and then a full unit of social studies.  There isn't enough time in the days to teach science and social studies at the same time.  We will start with our Earth science unit.  We will begin by discussing the Earth.  We will learn about the different rocks that are found on Earth.  On Tuesday we will have a brief discussion about Labor Day.  We will discuss why it is celebrated and who we are celebrating on this holiday.

**This will be my last blog of the year! This year flew by, I can't believe it is almost over.  Thank you for taking the time to read my blog each week. I will be sending home a summer review packet.  If they complete it and bring it back to me next year, I will have a prize for them.  It's important to continue to work over the summer (a little bit here and there-you need your fun and relaxation too!).  Try to keep up with the math facts, 2nd grade starts with 2-digit addition and they will have a hard time if they are slow on their math facts.  Also try to keep up with reading so they don't take the "Summer Slide" backwards.  I hope you all have a safe and fun filled summer!

**For those of you who don't know, I will be getting married this summer! My new name will be Mrs. Heppe.  I told the class this the other day, when some kindergarteners were talking about it.  Some seemed very confused and didn't fully understand why my name would be changing.  Thank you for allowing me to teach your children this year! I enjoyed getting to know each and everyone of them and I look forward to watching them grow throughout their time at St. Edwards! :)
