What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we will read "My Lucky Day" and discuss using quotation marks when someone is speaking.  We will also discuss the vocabulary words from within this book as well as work on comprehension by asking questions about what we read.  Students will be asked to fill out a story elements sheet based off of this story. 

Fundations:  We will begin with unit 8 which focuses on blends.  A blend is two or more consonants together each making its own sound, but they are "pushed" together (EX: sl is a blend in the word slip).  We will also begin to work with r-controlled vowels.  We will begin this week by learning the ar and or sounds.

Spelling:  There will be spelling words this week.  We will take the pre-test on Monday and the final test on Friday.

Writing:  We are going to continue with our opinion writing piece.  We are going to continue the writing process to write our own opinion writing piece.  We will finish writing our first drafts.  After we edit and review our first drafts together, I am going to have the students type their stories.  This may take some time, but it will be good practice for when we begin typing practice.  We should begin typing practice this quarter, just waiting for the class to get set up on the program we will use.

Math: We will begin unit 5 which focuses on place value strategies.  We will begin by working with unknown partners with teen totals and subtraction with teen numbers.  We will also begin mixed practice of both addition and subtraction with teen numbers.

Religion: We will continue with our Protecting God's Children Unit.  We will continue to discuss safe and unsafe situations.  We will talk about putting on the armor of God.  Each piece of armor represents something that gets protected.  We will begin by discussing the helmet, which protects our eyes from seeing harmful things.  We will also discuss the breastplate, which protects our hearts, and the shield, which is our faith in God.

Science: We will finish up our Human Body Unit.  We will review in class on Monday and take the chapter 3 test on Tuesday.

Social Studies: We will begin our Civics Unit.  We will begin reviewing where the United States of America is on a map and then discussing where the capital is.  We will then discuss some American symbols.  We will start by learning about the Liberty Bell.

*Monday, January 29th: We are Wild about Jesus Day! Dress as a wild animal. Leukemia hop in the morning.
*Tuesday, January 30th: Jesus is the Bright Light in our Lives! Dress in neon or bright colors.  Bowling field trip in the afternoon.
*Wednesday, January 31st: Jesus is Calling us to Read! Dress as your favorite book character.  Read-in in the gym in the afternoon - students are allowed to bring blankets, pillows, and 1 stuffed animal to read with.
*Thursday, February 1st: Jesus makes Everything Fun!  Dress in St. Edward clothes today.  Family night at Funset Boulevard 4pm-8pm.
*Friday, February 2nd: Grandparents Day! Dress in your best! Mass at 8:15am, Early release at 11:30

What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we will read "A Color of His Own" and discuss fiction vs. nonfiction.  We will also read a book on Martin Luther King, Jr. and discuss who he was and why we remember him today.  I will continue to test students at new guided reading levels.  There will be no new books sent home this week.  Please continue to read at home with your child.

Fundations:  We will finish up with unit 7 which focuses on the glued sounds.  This week we will review all glued sounds and work on adding the suffix -s to words that have a glued sound.

Spelling:  There will be spelling words this week.  We will take the pre-test on Monday and the final test on Friday.

Writing:  We are going to continue with our opinion writing piece.  We are going to continue the writing process to write our own opinion writing piece.  We will discuss how to write a strong introduction to our opinion story.  Then we will begin writing our introduction and opinion writing piece.  We will list our opinion and then reasons why.

Math: We will finish up with unit 4 which focuses on the basic ten structures.  We will play some 2-digit addition games continuing to practice adding.  We will review for the test on Tuesday and Wednesday and take the unit 4 test on Thursday.

Religion: We will begin our Protecting God's Children Unit.  This unit focuses on safe/unsafe touches, online safety, and putting on the armor of God.  We will begin by discussing what a safe/unsafe touch is.  We will briefly discuss how parts covered by a swimming suit shouldn't be touched by anyone.  We will discuss how to say no and to tell a parent or safe adult.  We will discuss who in our lives are safe adults.  We will also briefly talk about online safety and how we shouldn't play games that involving talking with strangers online.  These conversations and topics discussed will all be at the first grade level.  Please be informed that sometimes students have questions about things we talk about, I like to direct them to talk to their parents so you can choose what to say/how to handle these conversations.  

Science: We will continue our Human Body Unit.  We will begin chapter 3 called Taking Care of your Health.  We will begin by learning about what foods help us to grow.  We will talk about how we can stay healthy and take care of ourselves.

What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we read "The Mitten".  We will learn and discuss what cause and effect is.  We will find examples from the book.  We will also review sequencing events and verbs the animals used to get into the mitten.  There will be no guided reading books this week.  I will begin testing students at new guided reading levels.  Please continue to read at home every night.

Fundations:  We will continue with unit 7 which focuses on the glued sounds.  This week the glued sounds we will work with are ank, ink, onk, and unk.  We will discuss and learn spelling patterns of these glued sounds.

Spelling:  There will be spelling words this week.  We will take the pre-test on Monday and the final test on Friday.

Writing:  We are going to continue with our opinion writing piece.  The students did a good job at choosing the best part of themselves and saying why.  We are now going to start the writing process to write our own opinion writing piece.  We will begin by choosing something that we think is the best (sport, food, game, etc.).  We will then discuss how to write a strong introduction to our opinion story.

Math: We will continue with unit 4 which focuses on the basic ten structures.  We will continue to add tens and ones to get an answer.  We will begin to work with 2-digit numbers by learning how to count on and making a new ten group.

Religion: We will continue chapter 15 called "We Belong to a Parish".  We will discuss how our parish works together to help many people through service.  We will also review what a parish is.  We will take the chapter 15 test on Thursday and review in class on Wednesday.

Science: We will continue our Human Body Unit.  We will continue with chapter 2 called Growing and Changing.  We will learn what bones and muscles do as they grow and change.  We will review for the chapter 2 test on Tuesday.  We will take the test on Wednesday.  We will then begin chapter 3 called Taking Care of your Health.  We will begin by learning about what foods help us to grow.

What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we read "The Biggest, Best Snowman".  We will review how to sequence a story by order of events. We will also work on finding details in stories to help us describe the plot of a story.  There will be new guided reading books this week.  I will begin testing students at new guided reading levels next week.

Fundations:  We will begin unit 7 which focuses on the glued sounds ang, ing, ong, and ung.  We will learn these different sounds and spelling patterns.  We will also review rhyming words.

Spelling:  There will be spelling words this week.  We will take the pre-test on Tuesday and the final test on Friday.

Writing:  We are going to begin our opinion writing piece.  We will begin by reading "The Best Part of Me" and discuss how the kids in this book used their opinions to tell which part of them is the best.  We will practice writing opinions by choosing the best part of ourselves and telling why.

Math: We will continue with unit 4 which focuses on the basic ten structures.  We will learn to add with groups of ten and how to make-a-ten to help us add.  We will also use place value to compare numbers.

Religion: We will begin chapter 15 called "We Belong to a Parish".  We will discuss how our parish is like a family and how we gather each week to worship together.

Science: We will continue our Human Body Unit.  We will begin chapter 2 called Growing and Changing.  We will discuss how we've grown from when we were born to now.  Due to the business of the week before Christmas we did not get to science.  We will use the baby pictures that were brought in on Tuesday.  You will get your pictures back either Wednesday or Thursday.  We will also discuss growth in terms of measurement by measuring ourselves.

What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we read "Santa's Reindeer Games". We will discuss using expression as we read.  We will review nouns, verbs, and adjectives.  I will meet with guided reading groups this week.  I will be collecting all books before Christmas break so they don't get misplaced during break.  Please continue to read with your students over Christmas break.  Shortly after break I will be testing students at new guided reading levels.

Fundations:  We will review past units. 

Spelling:  There will be no spelling words this week.

Writing:  We are going to finish up our persuasive letters to Santa pretending to be reindeer wanting a job.  

Math: We will continue with unit 4 which focuses on the basic ten structures.  We will continue to work with tens and ones.  We will also begin to group ones into groups of tens.

Religion: We will continue our Advent unit.  We will continue to pray from our prayer chains as we countdown to Christmas.  We will finish up our Christmas and Advent discussions and activities.

Science: We will continue our Human Body Unit.  We will begin chapter 2 called Growing and Changing.  We will discuss how we've grown from when we were born to now.

**Please bring in a baby picture of your child.  We will use these pictures in our next science chapter when we talk about growing and changing.

What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we read "Bear Stays up for Christmas". We will learn what a preposition is and find them in our books.  Again due to play practices, our guided reading days will get mixed up.  I will meet with every group but not on their normal days.

Fundations:  We will finish up unit 6 which focuses on adding the suffix -s to words to make them plural.  This week we will learn to add the suffix -s to action words not just to make nouns plural.

Spelling:  There will be a spelling test this week!  The test will have action words with the suffix -s at the end.  This week the test will have 2 bonus words.  These words will count as extra credit.

Writing:  We are going to continue to write our persuasive letter to Santa pretending to be reindeer wanting a job.  

Math: We will continue with unit 4 which focuses on the basic ten structures.  We will work with teen numbers and adding to get teen totals.  We will also learn teen addition strategies like how to make a ten and how to count on to add.  We will begin to work with doubles strategies to help us add.

Religion: We will continue our Advent unit.  We will talk about Mary's good news from an angel, the travel to Bethlehem, Jesus' Birthday, and how the shepherds and wise men hear of the news.  We will continue to pray from our prayer chains as we countdown to Christmas.

Science: We will continue our Human Body Unit.  We will continue reviewing the 5 senses by taking a closer look at the sense of sight.  We will review everything we learned about the 5 senses on Tuesday and take the 5 senses test on Thursday.

**Please bring in a baby picture of your child.  We will use these pictures in our next science chapter when we talk about growing and changing.  We will not need the baby picture until Monday, December 18th.

What's coming up this week?

Reading: This week we read "Skippyjon Jones in the Doghouse". We will review what an antonym is and find antonyms in our books.  Due to Christmas play practices starting this week (we practice 2-3 times a week) and the half day on Wednesday, I will be meeting with reading groups on different days than normal.  I will still meet with every group but the days will be mixed around depending on the group and the day.  Please be patient as your child might not get a new book until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Fundations:  We will continue with unit 6 which focuses on adding the suffix -s to words to make them plural.  This week we will combine past rules and adding the suffix -s.  We will work with digraphs, bonus letters, and the suffix -s.

Spelling:  There will be a spelling test this week!  The test will have plural words with the suffix -s at the end.  We will also have the same list of trick words.  Many students did not do to well with last weeks spelling words so we are going to keep the trick words the same, just change the first two words.  Please make sure to practice these words at home every night!

Writing:  We are going to begin a persuasive letter to Santa pretending to be reindeer wanting a job.  

Math: We will begin unit 4 which focuses on the basic ten structures.  We will begin by review ten groups and counting by 10.  We will also explore teen numbers and how to represent them using ten sticks and ones.

Religion: We will begin our Advent unit.  We started to make our Advent wreaths last week, we will finish up them on Monday.  We will discuss how Jesus is our greatest gift this season.  We will be making a prayer chain to countdown to Christmas.  We will also learn about St. Nick this week.

Science: We will continue our Human Body Unit.  We will continue reviewing the 5 senses by taking a closer look at the sense of hearing and the sense of sight.

Play Practices: We will begin practicing for the Christmas play this week.  We practice as a whole school 2-3 times a week.  Due to this our schedule will get mixed up a bit.  We will for sure have reading, math, and religion everyday; but the other subjects will be cut short due to practicing.  The play is a great experience for the students and they really enjoy performing.  Thank you for being understanding as these next few weeks our class schedule will be a bit mixed up.
